Many believe that abstaining from a substance automatically means recovery.
Alcohol, drugs or pills are excluded – meaning the problem is solved. But in practice, things turn out to be more complicated.

At the «Renaissance» centre in Poland, we often work with patients who are formally sober but internally continue to live in addiction. Their condition is described by the term «dry drunk».

This condition is dangerous because outwardly the person looks «fine» but internally the same struggle that once led to addiction continues.
Without awareness and in-depth psychotherapy, dry sobriety often ends in relapse or the replacement of one addiction with another.

"Dry drunk" is a term used to describe someone who has stopped drinking alcohol but has not addressed the underlying issues that led to their drinking in the first place. They may have physically abstained from alcohol but still exhibit the personality traits and behaviours associated with active alcoholism, such as: * **Denial:** Refusing to acknowledge the severity of their past drinking or the impact it had. * **Defensiveness:** Becoming angry or irritable when confronted about their behaviour. * **Blaming others:** Shifting responsibility for their problems onto other people or circumstances. * **Self-centredness:** Focusing excessively on their own needs and feelings, often to the detriment of others. * **Emotional immaturity:** Struggling to manage emotions constructively, leading to outbursts or withdrawal. * **Obsession with drinking:** Constantly thinking about alcohol, even if they aren't drinking it. * **Restlessness and irritability:** Feeling on edge and easily annoyed. * **Dishonesty:** Lying or manipulating to get what they want. **Why is it dangerous?** Being a "dry drunk" is dangerous for several reasons: * **High risk of relapse:** Without addressing the root causes of addiction, the person is much more likely to return to drinking, often with more severe consequences. * **Damage to relationships:** The continued negative behaviours can alienate friends, family, and colleagues, leading to further isolation. * **Mental health deterioration:** The unaddressed emotional and psychological issues can worsen, leading to anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems. * **Continued destructive behaviours:** Even without alcohol, the person may engage in other unhealthy or self-destructive behaviours to cope. * **Stagnation in recovery:** They may believe they are "recovered" simply because they are not drinking, hindering their progress towards genuine, lasting sobriety and personal growth. In essence, simply stopping the physical act of drinking is only the first step in recovery. True recovery involves addressing the psychological, emotional, and social aspects of addiction.

A "dry drunk" is a state where a person:

Formally he is sober. Psychologically, he is still dependent.

What is the essence of the problem

Addiction is not just about a chemical substance.
This is:

When a person simply «stops using» (a substance), but doesn't address the underlying causes, they:

"Dry sobriety" is dangerous

A person can remain sober for years and yet not feel alive.

Signs of inner struggle after substance cessation

Sober sobriety rarely looks like serenity. More often it appears as constant tension.

Основные признаки сухого алкоголика:

▪ Constant irritability. Small things trigger fits of anger; no patience with people.

Black-and-white thinking. «Either perfect or failure,» harsh judgments of oneself and others.

▪ Denial of emotions. The person is unable to talk about feelings and considers emotions a weakness.

Control and rigidity. The desire to control everything: oneself, loved ones, circumstances.

A feeling of emptiness. No joy, inspiration, or interest – sobriety is perceived as a punishment.

▪ Devaluing help. «I don't need therapy,» «I managed on my own.».

Dependency substitutions. Workaholism, overeating, addiction to sports, social media, control.

▪ Constant inner struggle. Each day is like holding back, rather than a conscious choice.

This condition is exhausting, both psychologically and physically.

Why is long-term psychotherapy needed?

The main mistake with dry sobriety is believing the work is already done. In reality, it's only just beginning.

Why is sobriety alone not enough?

Addiction is built up over years. It affects:
