It destroys not only the patient's physical and emotional state but also closest relationships \u2013 with a partner, spouse, parents, and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the \u00abRenaissance\u00bb centre in Poland, we see how much couples suffer when one partner is dealing with addiction to chemicals, gambling, or food. Fear, distrust, exhaustion, attempts to control, aggression, distance \u2013 all of this slowly erodes even the strongest of unions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, we also see how relationships can become a powerful resource for recovery, if both partners receive support, knowledge and psychological help.<br>This article is about how to build a healthy relationship when addiction is present in a couple, and how the partner can preserve themselves without destroying the love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Addiction can affect personal life by damaging relationships, causing financial problems, impacting health, and leading to legal issues.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addiction is not just a bad habit. It is a disease that affects the brain, emotions, motivation, and behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, relationships near an addicted person inevitably change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Main reasons for breakdown of communication:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Loss of trust<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An addict often hides their use, lies, and breaks promises. The partner begins to live in a state of \u00abcheck-ups\u00bb and anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Emotional rollercoaster<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ecstatic moods one minute, then coldness, irritability, aggression \u2013 addiction makes your emotional state unpredictable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Financial difficulties<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money is spent on substances, gambling, tablets and escorts, which creates stress and conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Problems with intimacy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sexual and emotional connection is suffering, leading to feelings of distance and loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. Roles within a couple become disrupted.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partner starts to take on more responsibility, tries to \u00absave,\u00bb control, and fix problems \u2013 and this leads to emotional burnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At \u00abRenaissance\u00bb we always say:<br>It's not just the addict who suffers \u2013 the whole family suffers.<br>This means they both need help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Co-dependency: dangerous scenarios<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Codependency is a state where a partner becomes so involved in the life of an addicted person that they lose themselves.<br>It's not weakness, it's a natural reaction of a close person who wants to help, save, and keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But codependency doesn't cure addiction \u2013 it strengthens it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Signs of codependency:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attempts to completely control the life of an addict;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overprotection, financial \u00abrescue\u00bb, hiding the consequences;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guilt if your partner \u00abdidn't support you well\u00bb.;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sacrificing personal interests, work, and friends for an addict.;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>persistent anxiety and emotional instability;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The feeling that all of life is a struggle for a person.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dangerous co-dependency scenarios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The partner justifies the use: \u00abhe's tired,\u00bb \u00abshe's stressed.\u00bb;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lies, debts, problems;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>forces treatment through pressure and threats;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>endures humiliation and aggression, fearing to destroy the relationship;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forgets about their needs, health, boundaries.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the \u00abRenaissance\u00bb centre, we explain:<br>Codependency is also an illness that requires therapy.<br>Without working through it, the couple's recovery is impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can a partner support recovery<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A partner plays a huge role in the treatment process. However, it is important that support does not turn into control or self-sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What really helps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calm, honest communication<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don't accuse, don't attack, but talk about feelings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00abI'm scared\u00bb<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00abI want to be near\u00bb<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00abIt hurts me to watch this\u00bb<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. Borders<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Support doesn't mean letting everything slide.<br>Healthy boundaries are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00abI'm not hiding your problems.\u00bb<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00abI don't give money for consumption.\u00bb<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00abI'm not lying for you\u00bb<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. Self-care<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help another, a partner needs to look after themselves.<br>We are learning how to regain our strength, avoid burnout, and not dissolve into the struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Couples therapy - when is it needed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes relationships are damaged so deeply that they cannot be repaired without professional help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Couples therapy at \u00abRenaissance\u00bb is indicated if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is no
